Reading the US news this evening, sifting through the tea leaves, it is not a comfortable feeling to see what is happening. The song that springs immediately to mind comes from Alastair Ian Stewart —
“The Last Days of June, 1934“
What had been seen at the time as a failure, the events 100 years ago this week, led to the events above with even greater impact a few years later. Where Stewart speaks of Europe sleeping, perhaps it is America now that slumbers on obliviously. Let us hope it wakes up in time (as in election time).
