Trying to decide about using Substack… there seem to be some obstacles there that have a whiff of general “unwebliness” about them.
By that I mean, a writing/sharing/publishing platform should facilitate that sharing of and, in return, the sharing back from users, either through their comments or back-linking to their own sites.
Corporate entities hate it when we exhibit our hamster-attention spans (Ooooo! Shiny shiny!) but we should still feel free to exercise our freedom to go elsewhere.
I get that not everything I post, or anyone else for that matter, is grippingly exciting or of interest to everyone. But then, I also firmly believe you have the right (obligation) to skip it and move on. But there’s some thing that feels slightly off about the way I’m finding Substack to work… I know that the experience is likely to be highly different for paid-subscription users (sure, it’s NICE to get paid for what you love doing!) but we should also be able to bring people into that group painlessly and not throwing up paywalls for every last breathless post.
This blog is free to read. I hope to keep it that way. And I am paying for that decision and privilege. I have other sites where I am groveling for groats (driveling for dollars, whatever) and I certainly appreciate if anyone is so moved. I’m not saying that we have to give it all away for free, but there should certainly be a better balance or an alternative (I think that there is, prove me wrong). META’s recent behavior is a major factor in my move away from the colossally-corporate social media machine and these are the tools I will be using.
I’m not a journalist (certainly not by training). I’m a retired archivist/librarian who also happens to be a musician and visual artist. I’m using these tools to share my work and ideas and yes, as a dear friend says, rant and piss people off.
